How a Steam Heating System Works

Using the power from a burner a steam boiler heats water fueled by gas or oil. The pressure in the boiler unit pushes the steam through pipes to radiators. This emanates heat throughout a room. The steam turns back into water as it cools. Then it is sent back through the pipes to the boiler to be reheated into steam.

Advantages of a Steam Heating System

Steam heating systems are not only reliable but also long-lasting because they have few moving parts. Steam heat is ideal for individuals with environmental allergies. Other heating systems have a tendency to kick up dust and circulate allergens.

For a historic home or older building. A steam boiler is a way to stay true to the original building plans as well as overall ambiance. These heating systems are also cost-effective option for large-scale commercial buildings like apartment complexes and hotels.

How to Check on Your Boiler

It's a good idea to check out your boiler any time you happen to be around in. A quick spot-check can help you stay on top of problems before they become major. First, always be on the lookout for any leaks. Leaking water will change the pressure in your system and greatly affect the equipment's ability to function efficiently. Ongoing leaks can also cause serious water damage related problems.

Clear anything away from your boiler that doesn't belong there. and check temperature and pressure readings. These gauges usually show the area that your gauges should be operating within. Many newer systems also offer error and service codes on a display panel. Be sure to record any service codes when you see them and let us know right away.

Your boiler vents to the outside. Keep a carbon monoxide detector near your equipment at all times. A CO2 reading may indicate that your flu or vent termination are blocked. Snow and ice can obstruct the vent termination, so be sure to keep that area clear. Debris can also accumulate. Similarly, Inspect the combustion air opening for blockages. This is located closer to the floor than the flu and vent system.

And, of course, take not of any unusual vibrations or noises from the equipment.
